In the Autumn of 2015 Queen’s Manor began the roll out of Maths Mastery in Year 1, with the intention that this class, along with subsequent year groups, will follow the Maths Mastery approach as they journey through the school.
The Maths Mastery approach was developed by a number of education professionals including headteachers and maths leaders. It is based on the popular Singapore model of teaching maths and encompasses the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum (2014).
Maths Mastery is an approach to teaching maths that encourages learners to achieve a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts, rather than learning procedures by rote. The three key features of the Maths Mastery approach are:
- The use of concrete resources and pictorial representations of number, before moving on to abstract symbols and signs
- The development of mathematical language
- The development of problem-solving skills in all learners
Rising Stars is used to support the teaching of maths from Year 2 to Year 6.
Children in Nursery and Reception follow the Development Matters framework. Maths is a specific area of learning, broken down into two sections: Number and Shape, Space and Measures.
